About This Place

Located within the charming Sports Pavilion at The Playing Field in Bardwell, The Grumpy Goat Cafe, Bar & Restaurant offers a delightful fusion of vibrant café culture, hearty bar fare, and classic restaurant comfort. This versatile spot perfectly balances the relaxed warmth of a local café with the satisfying appeal of a quality dining destination, all set against the picturesque backdrop of the Bardwell Cricket Club ground.

The menu is a celebration of generous, flavour-packed British fare with a handful of creative twists. Breakfast lovers will find comfort in the quintessential English Breakfast and the simple pleasure of a crispy Bacon Roll, while those coming for lunch or dinner will be drawn to standout dishes like the homemade steak burgers. From the classic burger topped with cheddar, fresh baby gem lettuce, and zesty mayo served alongside skinny fries and chargrilled corn, to the BBQ Steak Burger, which layers smoky streaky bacon, pepper jack cheese, peppery tempura jalapeños, and fresh coleslaw atop a juicy patty – both exemplify a masterful balance of textures and rich, smoky, and fresh flavours.

Seafood aficionados aren’t left out either, with a traditional Classic Fish & Chips featuring perfectly battered cod and triple-cooked chips that deliver that sought-after crispy crunch yet tender interior. The Sunday Roast offers a comforting, well-priced £10 roast dinner that adds a homely touch to the weekend.

For those wanting lighter fare or a welcoming café experience, the café’s freshly made warm fruit scones served with butter, jam, and clotted cream have received glowing praise for their homemade quality and the pleasurable synergy with good-quality tea or a velvety vanilla latte. The Grumpy Goat’s drink menu is equally compelling, boasting artisan coffees and indulgent drinks like hot chocolate that feel like a comforting hug on a chilly day.

What truly elevates The Grumpy Goat beyond just its menu is its atmosphere. Regular visitors rave about the friendly, welcoming staff whose warmth creates a genuinely inviting space. Whether you’re popping in for a morning coffee to soak in the calm, enjoying a family brunch, or settling in post-cycling for a leisurely meal, the cafe-bar-restaurant hybrid encourages everyone to relax – including your furry friends, as the venue is delightfully dog-friendly.

With its spacious layout, ample parking, a play area for children, and scenic views of the playing field, it’s no wonder Paul Haines calls The Grumpy Goat "an absolute gem" and his favourite post-ride pit stop. The venue’s vibrant sense of community combined with fantastic food and drink truly makes it a treasured Bardwell destination.

Whether it’s the comfort of the hearty pork belly, the promise of a perfectly grilled hot dog, or the cozy charm of a vanilla latte enjoyed in the subdued warmth of this café-bar’s inviting interior, The Grumpy Goat offers a uniquely wholesome dining experience that satisfies both the palate and the spirit.

I came in for a cup of tea but saw the warm fruit scone with butter, jam and clotted cream offer and decided to have that. Super nice homemade scone and good quality cup of tea.

Been here a few times for coffee on weekday mornings and it's a lovely place to visit. I've had excellent vanilla lattes, the staff members have been friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is quiet and comfy.

The new Goat Cafe is fabulous, with a lovely warm atmosphere that is perfect for a cozy winter stop in. The food (I got the tuna crunch toastie) is amazing and hearty. 'I could eat this everyday!'. The drinks (hot chocolate for me!) are beautiful and yummy, and the hostess is perfectly welcoming and kind. Thank goodness for such a lovely place!

An absolute gem of a venue this. My new favourite stop after a cycle ride. Fantastic, spacious venue overlooking the Bardwell Cricket Club ground. Loads of parking, a play area for the kids, great food, a fantastic range of beers, absolutely amazing staff who are perhaps the friendliest I’ve ever witnessed and, cricket! What’s not to like!!! Absolutely love this place, it’s made my summer and it’s only 2.5 miles away from our house - perfect.
